Undergraduate English Language Requirements
International students applying for undergraduate programs, must provide evidence of their English language proficiency.
Unless otherwise stated, applicants must have satisfied these requirements no more than two years preceding enrolment at La Trobe University. Certain courses may require a higher level of English proficiency.
The standard English language requirements are as follows:
Successful completion of English for Further Studies Advanced Stage 5B certificate at undergraduate (EFS5 (60%) UG) level which is available at the La Trobe University Language Centre.
IELTS (Academic) - A minimum overall band score of 6.0 with no individual band score less than 6.0.
TOEFL* - Computer-based Test: A minimum score of 213 with a score of 5 in essay writing.
Paper-based Test: A minimum score of 550 with a score of 5 or better in the Test of Written English.
Internet-based Test (iBT): A minimum score of 80 with no individual score less than 20.
General Certificate of Education (GCE) A-level: A grade of C or better in the General Paper (English) from Britain, Hong Kong, Kenya, Singapore or South Africa.
International Baccalaureate: A minimum of 4 in English A1 or A2 (Higher and Standard Levels) or a minimum of 5 in English B (Higher Level).
Satisfactory completion of an English language subject at Year 12 or equivalent level at an academic level acceptable to La Trobe University.
Satisfactory completion of at least one year of TAFE or University study in Australia at an academic level acceptable to La Trobe University.
English as the language of instructioin secondary and/or tertiary studies may be accepted.

There are a number of courses in the areas of Education, Health Sciences, International Relations, Journalism, Law, Legal and Media Studies, Pharmacy, Psychology and Social Work that have higher or different English requirements. Please check your course description in the table of undergraduate programs on this website or in the Undergraduate Course Guide.
English test results must be no more than two years old.
Please note that in some countries the Australian Department of Immigration and Citizenship (DIAC) requires students to provide a minimum IELTS score as part of the student visa application process. More information is available from the DIAC website.
Postgraduate English Language Requirements
International students applying for must provide evidence of their English language proficiency as follows:
International students applying for postgraduate coursework or research programs, or postgraduate Study Abroad units, must provide evidence of their English language proficiency.
Unless otherwise stated, applicants must have satisfied these requirements no more than two years preceding enrolment at La Trobe University.
The standard English language requirements are as follows:
IELTS (Academic) - A minimum overall band score of 6.5 with no individual band score less than 6.0.
TOEFL* - Computer-based Test: A minimum score of 233 with a score of 5 in essay writing.
Paper-based Test: A minimum score of 575 with a score of 5 or better in the Test of Written English.
Internet-based Test (iBT): A minimum score of 88 with no individual score less than 22.
Completion of the English for Further Studies Advanced Stage 5B certificate at postgraduate (EFS5 (70%) PG1) level which is available from the La Trobe University Language Centre.
English as the language of instruction in secondary or tertiary studies may be accepted.
