The speaker claims that that the character of the men and women that the society chooses as its heroes or heroines can best represent the character of a society, I fundamentally agree with the speaker insofar as heroes do represent some respects of the society they live in, however they can not accurately reflect every facet of the nation

Admittedly, heroes are selected by the public who generally contrite to a better society, therefore to some extent they represent some characters of his motherland. It’s because the first president of the USA-Washington led the army to be independent of British’s colonial domination that he is regarded as a hero. He is representative of Americans’ braveness, the desire for independence and democracy. Thomas Edison is regarded as hero due to his inventing electric lamp. He represents the Americans’ intelligence. By reading history books and watching movies about heroes in Chinese history one can understand some characters of Chinese, their wisdom, diligence and the courage in front of difficulties. The inventor four great inventions of ancient China and many soldiers died in the battle against Japanese aggressors are also heroes in the eyes of public.

Although all heroes mentioned above well demonstrate certain characters of their nation, they are only a small and special part of our society and therefore can not represent all the characters of a nation. On the contrary, to better understand a society, we should not only examine its heroes in the past, at present and in the future, but also study some other aspects of a society such as all of its citizens’ living standards, welfare, health, the nation’s political and legal system, culture, history and so forth. There is a persuasive example that illustrates this point, in order to reflect the life of African people and the conditions of their African society in their works, many writer and singer go to spend a long time there. Then an all-sided picture of hunger, poverty and racial conflict was given to the public, only in this way is the understanding of a society valuable and credible.

Furthermore, different people hold distinct standards for heroes. For example, for most people, when it comes to the word hero, such luminaries as America’s Abraham Lincoln and Marin Luther King Jr South Africa’s Nelson Mandela come immediately to mind, but for some young people, their heroes are limited to famous sports and singers or actors either for their special talent or even for their sexy appearance. Now matter how great a political leader or a scientist is, he or she may not gain acceptance from those young people. For this matter, it is hard to understand a society from the characters of heroes in the eyes of our young generation, more important it is time for us to instill our new generation a proper value system
