To change is to risk something, making us feel insecure. Not to change is a bigger risk, though we seldom feel that way. There is no choice but to change. People, however, cannot be motivated to change from the outside. All of our motivation comes from within.

“The only thing that remains unchanged is the law of change.” Such were the remarks of a renowned Greek philosopher. Living in a world rapidly moving itself on the wheels of the twenty-first century technology, we are bound to encounter and initiate all kinds of changes. To keep pace with the world and not to be left behind by time, I believe we often make changes and the motivations of these changes come from two distinct sources: our inner self and the outer surrounding.

With regards to the topic, I think our inner thoughts contribute greatly to the changes that occur in our lives. “How well you make a change is well based on your will to change”, this famous quote often roamed my mind whenever I felt like making any changes from deep within. In the comedy movie ‘Harold and Kumar’, the leading characters, Harold and Kumar, were sick and tired of their day-in-day-out tedious life. Determined from deep within their souls, they decided to change their lives for good. With the petrified will to change, Harold, together with Kumar, set out in search of a totally new life. This is where the movie illustrates on and their legends begin. From them, we can easily see that some of the changes in our lives can actually be initiated by our very own inner feelings.

On the other side of the leaf, I do believe the notion that surroundings and environments that encompass us sometimes act actively in our course of making changes. During my own childhood, I faced the dilemma of switching to a new language at the tender age of eight when my family moved to Singapore from China. When I first arrived, I realized that my classmates were all of different colors and spoke different tongues; the most distinct similarity among us was English. Thus, the best and quickest way for me to get around my peers and survive well in this entirely strange environment was to familiarize myself with the alphabets and then embark on a journey of English.

Putting all into a nutshell, we can safely conclude that there are many types of motivations in our lives, but they can be easily categorized into two distinct groups. One is because of our own desire to change; the other is due to the outer circumstances that propel us to make changes.
