The Welfare and Advice Team at King's hosts a free welcome and orientation programme for new international students at the beginning of the autumn term. The welcome and orientation for students joining King’s this September will run from Wednesday 10th to Friday 12th September 2008, with condensed follow-up sessions on each campus during the week beginning Monday 15th September for anyone who cannot attend the longer event.( A" `# M3 U. q7 P  Y; k. x( f

What are the aims of the Orientation event?You will of course have lots of fun but you will also get some very useful information on being a student in London. The Orientation programme will give you the opportunity to:
0 w4 p, [( E  ~& s- y
# ~& H& Q+ \2 _
  • make friends with other new international students
  • meet current King’s students who can give you top tips on where to go in London and how to make the most of your time and budget here at King’s
  • find out where to go for advice and support at King’s from health care to your future career and to meet staff from the vast range of support services available to you
  • receive important information on a range of topics including immigration, working in the UK and how to open a bank account
  • get to know King’s and London before you officially enrol with the College, so you are able to concentrate fully on your studies once term starts

J; R9 {% e# w6 d" ^9 kWhat are we offering?During an evening reception on the evening you arrive you will have the chance to meet lots of new and current students from all over the world studying a variety of subject across all four campuses. Some additional meals will also be provided throughout the programme.
! n/ v6 h/ p7 H% P
- @* Q* ^' r8 h# y& ^4 QThe Orientation will include a series of workshops and talks presented by King’s College staff and guest speakers and covering a wide range of topics, during which you will have the opportunity to ask the experts any questions you may have.
+ ~" Z* \0 Q* F( z( Z* U% [- s7 ^* j* B* g; F7 B( l1 m- o% s
On the Friday you will be able to attend an Information Fair to introduce you to a range of services you may use during your time in the UK and collect useful information.

We will also be organising a cruise down the famous River Thames to see some of the famous sites of London and there’s the chance to take part in a traditional British pub quiz!5 K8 U/ Y2 m+ s

WorkshopsWorkshops which will run during the event include:

" I( X/ V' C. w% F
  • Banking: The Welfare Team will talk to you about how to open a bank account in the UK
  • Staying Healthy: A member of staff from the College Health Centre will talk to you about health related matters, how to register with a GP and access health care while you are in the UK
  • Immigration: The Welfare Team will go through matters relating to your student visa, working in the UK during and after your studies and how to register with the police
  • Safety: a member of the Metropolitan Police will tell you how you can make sure you stay safe in a big city and protect your belongings from theft
  • Careers: staff from the Careers Service will tell you how they can support you and help you find work during and after your time at King’s
  • Living in London: King's College London staff and students will cover issues on transport, accommodation, shopping, how to eat cheaply and where to find free entertainment so you can make the most of living in this fantastic city!

In addition to these, there will be other workshops including English Language support, and study skills for all students and the support available to you while you are a student at King's College London." U9 N0 R1 e7 ~

7 Z' X9 v$ y7 G+ V( w% \. l/ B2 wHow can I attend?We encourage as many students as possible who are studying a full degree course at King’s to attend an orientation event. There is no charge for the International Students’ Welcome and Orientation programme, but you will need to book a place so we know to expect you!3 G6 A. {3 K5 N2 u+ O, P$ P8 a

You will also need to organise and pay for your accommodation in London during the Orientation. In most cases, students who will be living in College Accommodation during term-time will be able to move in early. For further information about accommodation please visit the accommodation web page.

The booking form for the Orientation and Welcome programme will be available on the website from July 2008. Please note the programme is still provisional and details will be confirmed nearer the date.
