issue60 "The media—and society ingeneral—mistakenly expect an individual to speak for a particular group, whether or not that individual truly represents the views of the entiregroup."
媒体和整个社会错误地希望某个人的发言就是代表了某一个特定的群体,无论这个个人是否代表了整个群体的意见。
Any one of organicsystem is composed of diverse elements. Every element represents theindividual, while the system stands for the whole. The closed relationship ofthe whole and the individual can not be cut off. In other words, they can not beisolated from the other separately. Hence, I fundamentally agree with thespeaker's standpoint that an individual's opinion is representative of thegroup's. In my view, albeit majority of the individual's opinion is not equivalentto the group's opinion, under some circumstances, the individual's opinion orbehavior stands for a particular group.
Firstly, if an opinionstems from an individual or an element that plays a crucial role in the whole, underparticular scenes, the individual's opinion or behavior symbolizes the whole, the entire group in a large sense. With respect to normal people, if a foreigner, for instance, makes some unmoral or uncultivated things in our country, such asspeaking dirty words in public, ruining the public facilities, or spittinganywhere, etc. As the host of the country, we instinctively engender a badimpression on the person, even relating to the nation that the person comesfrom. On the contrary, if one person makes some great contributions, throughindividual endeavor, to the nation or a region which is not his/her country;the native people would not only extremely appreciate you, but rather have agood impression on that person’s country. To some extent, under particularcircumstances, an individual's speaking or behavior not only stands for oneselfbut is representative of the level of morality and culture of one’s nation. Withrespect to the special people in a society, those who play vital roles in the specificgroup under particular circumstances represent the views of the entire group. Apresident’s speaking, for example, generally stands for the interest of hiscountry and his people. The order from chief commanders in the military representsthe strategy of the whole troops. An understanding to a piece of symphony froma conductor who is symbolized as the soul of the orchestra, in a sense, reflectsand conveys the comprehension of the whole orchestra. Therefore, an individual,as the soul of the group, has a crucial effect on the group.
However, overemphasizing the individual that result in ignoring the group will causesome negative aftermaths. Democracy has commonly been regarded as a subject ofany great moment in modern times. An individual's opinion against the democracywill impede the solution to problem. Tracing back to the history, many examplestell us that the arbitrary individual's opinion and behavior are bound to leadto that the group fell in the hazardous situation. Without any idea of thegroup's interest, the individual not only will be isolated by the group butalso will loss its own function in the group. In most cases, even though the individual’sopinion is unique and valuable, however it is usually one-sided, whichwould not cover the whole picture. Thus, gathering the energy that every element reveals, the strength of the group willbe more powerful. One plus one is greater than two.
Admittedly, somefrictions between the individual's opinion and the group's opinion areinevitable. As we know, the group's opinion should stand for the majority ofpeople's thinking. Consequently, the fact of first-rate importance is how todeal with the relationship between the individual's opinion and the group'sopinion. Respecting the group's opinion should be frequently put the firstplace. A regulation that the minority is subordinated to the majority is obeyedordinarily. But, some unique and helpful individual’s opinions or ideas, as akind of reference, are so valuable and instrumental to the group.
All in all, sometimes an individual is a symbol of a particular group, while individualonly is a part of the whole frequently. Either thewhole or the individual of a unity should not overwhelm the other, because they are interdependent, indispensable for theother as well. If not, what comes inevitably will be the disaster, instead ofthe prosperity.
