Issue24
People in positions of power are most effective when they exercise caution and restraint in the use of that power.
I fundamentally agree with the speaker’s assertion that it is necessary for individuals to exercise caution and restraint in the use of power in order to achieve more effective results. A contrary view would reveal an ignorant about serious consequences such as corruption, dictatorship which encouraged by power abuse; and about the importance of cautious in decision making. Nevertheless, leaders or politicians must not allow hesitation lead to inertia over urgent issues.
One reason for my fundamental agreement with the speaker is that without caution and restrain people in positions of power, take political leaders, for example, would tend to abuse the power bestowed by public by deceiving and manipulating the citizenry. For example, the world’s most famous paranoid mad and Dictator Hitler, who achieved his ultimate power in Germany by demagoguery, brought the world into the biggest tragedy of humanity--- The Second World War, by pulling off his own vicious ambition----controlling the world.
Another reason why I essentially agree with the speaker is that caution and restraint would assist the public decision maker make the best choice. It is common sense that everyone makes mistakes, so do politicians. Either the politician’s self-caution or restraint from Oppositions or the public media would help politician have full considerations over issues. An negative example, the never ending Iraq War, come immediately to mind, if the Bush administration were more caution with their foreign policy, America would have avoided bogging into the quagmire of war, and Iraqi people would not suffering from the horrifying humanitarian disaster.
Having recognized that caution and restraint is often necessary for effective leadership, however, a great politician sometimes has to break conventional restraints for the good of public.
History informs us that those would-be leaders always need to have enough courage to beak constraint that impedes the country’s development. For example, Deng Xiaoping, who largely credited with developing China into one of the fastest growing economies in the world, had to step away the dominant communist theories of Mao Zedong and Karl Marx in order to carry on his political reform.
In sum, effective leadership calls for a certain amount of caution and restraint to avoid the damage of public interest and failure decision making. Nevertheless, without the courage to break conventional force, a well intentioned politician and the public would have to bear the consequences of being inactive over serious issues.
