In the argument, the speaker attempt to prove that dentists should target the male consumer to alleviate their pain, because men faint 3 times than women while visiting the dentist. However, I find this assertion inconvincible and flawed for sever reasons as follows.
Firstly, the arguer connects faint to the distress forcefully and illogically. In fact, the reason of faint is various and changeable. Maybe other factors are instead responsible for the fact that men's faint more .It is possible that men on average suffer from more painful than women. Without minding this and altercating the explanation, the arguer cannot convince me that any advertisement can reduce distress or faint among male patients.
Secondly, the arguer asserts that the advertisement will be effective and anesthetic techniques will have the intended effect. As a matter of fact, males focus little on the dental advertisement, then to some extent , the advertisement is invalid to male patients; on the other hand ,it is likely that the advertisement plays an opposite role in reducing the distress and faint-- anesthetic techniques imply that with this technique , the pain will be reduced. Yet whether it is effective depends on the material factors. That means if you do not try it, you will never know the fact. So, the arguer must address these possibilities and rule them out before we can accept the recommendation.
Thirdly, the arguer's advice relies on the unsubstantiated assumptions about the statistics the author cited. Obviously, there is no evidence showing that the male patients contributing to the statistics are representative of all dental patients. It is entirely possible that a disproportionate number of male contribute to statistics .Then the statistics maybe do not fit the whole group, referring to biased and inconvincible research. Unless the arguer cites more evidences to substantiate the assumption with general inferences about dental patients.
To sum up my opinion, the argument that dentists should target the male consumer to alleviate their pain is inconvincible and flawed. To strengthen it, the speaker had better point out the accurate reason why male patient faint more than female often; what’s more, the advertisement should be a positive effective function in reducing the pain, rather than the negative function. The creditability of the statistics should be improved to a higher degree with general research on male patients.
