The deserts have in recent decades been increasing at an alarming pace. Thisexpansion is called desertification.

Desertification is accomplished through natural processes such as thereduction of vegetation, the erosion of soil by wind and water, and globalwarming.

There is little doubt, however, that desertification in most areasresults primarily from human activities rather than natural processes .Fourspecific activities have been identified as major contributors todesertification: overcultivation, overgrazing, firewood gathering, andoverirrigation.

The extreme seriousness of desertification also results from the greatdifficulty of reversing or even slowing the progress. But it is possible toreserve the deterioration of the surface by a rigorously enforced program ofland protection and over-crop planting.
