TOPIC: ARGUMENT212 - The following appeared in a memorandum from the new president of the Patriot car manufacturing company.
"In the past, the body styles of Patriot cars have been old-fashioned, and our cars have not sold as well as have our competitors' cars. But now, since many regions in this country report rapid increases in the numbers of newly licensed drivers, we should be able to increase our share of the market by selling cars to this growing population. Thus, we should discontinue our oldest models and concentrate instead on manufacturing sporty cars. We can also improve the success of our marketing campaigns by switching our advertising to the Youth Advertising agency, which has successfully promoted the country's leading soft drink."
in this argument, the new president of the Patriot car manufacturing points out that they should discontinue their oldest models and concentrate instead on manufacturing sporty cars. at the same time they should switch their advertising to the Youth Advertising agency. To support his view ,the president reasoned that their cars' body styles have been old-fashioned and in this country there are rapid increasing in the numbers of newly liscensed drivers.while it seems plausible , we will find that the president commits several fallacies when further analyzing his assertion.
Firstly ,a threshold problem with the argument involves the ‘old-fashioned’ Patriot Cars. The arguer provides no evidence that whether the ‘old fashioned’ Patriot cars is still popular. The presidence also haven’t provide the price of the ‘old-fashioned’ Patriot car. Mybe the ‘old-fashioned car’ price is sextuple of the competitor’ car. Lacking such evidence, it is entirely that although the body styles of Patriot cars have been old-fashioned, the ‘old fashioned car’ is still very popular and the price it sextuple of the competitor’car.
Secondly, The argument also assumes unfairly that, according to a survey, there is rapid increases in the number if newly licensed drivers, so they should increase their share of the market by selling cars to this growing population. How ridiculous it is! The president overlooks a myriad of other possible reasons for the increasing number of newly drivers. perhaps it is only the regions in the report that he or she surveyed increases rapidly in the number of newly liscened drivers.the other regions haven’t increased or even declined. So before the president make this argument, he should give more survey to us.
Thirdly, Even if the president can substantiate all of the foregoing assumptions, he’ conclusion that their company should concentrate instead on manufacturing sporty cars is unwarranted. Why not make some family cars or travelling use cars which has more practicality. The president didn’t give such a comparision. So he could not turn company’direction into making the sporty cars.
Fourthly, it is questionable whether the company can improve the success of their marketing campaigns by switching our advertising to the Youth Advertising agency. The president unfirely assert that the country's leading soft drink is successfully promoted in this way. The president has make a classical mistake that we also always make. The experience of the leading soft drink succeeding may not suit to auto-industry. If the president must copy the way of leading soft drink’ succeeding, He have to do enough survey at first which show that this plan will make profit for the company finally.
To sum up, we can see the recommendation was undermined by its insufficient sample, false analog and inadequate interpretations of some fact. to better strengthen the argument, the president should have to provide more evidence concerning that whether the car is still fashioned . what is the new driver’ favorite car. Which way is the best way for the company to advertise its product.
