We use digital video microscopy to study microscopic details of melting
8 o4 t6 u+ [; s Kand nucleation of colloidal crystals. The diameter of our novel colloidal
! X9 \ a* z' n
spheres (i.e. “big atoms”) can be tuned by temperature. Our collaborators
: P3 U2 O4 o3 ~1 @
have studied the melting behavior of polycrystals with these novel spheres
8 U2 v$ J- G$ e) `: m+ r% }(Cover of Science 309, p1207, 2005). The next step is to study the melting
\* ~% G$ r% X4 Y/ z
behaviors of single 3D crystals, superheated 3D crystals, several-layer
+ g4 e8 @5 R: J! q- Z6 Z) |
thin crystal films and free-floating crystal blobs. Our preliminary
% w! y5 c# V g% C5 } Presults showed that these systems exhibited very rich phenomena that are

of fundamental interest. Our collaborator, Prof. Arjun Yodh at the

University of Pennsylvania, will provide the colloids.

Geometrical frustration was mainly investigated in magnetic spin systems.

Recently its static properties were measured in a mesoscopic model system
( L$ W7 z8 F% ~7 h: y(Cover of Nature, 439, p303, 2006) with “single-spin resolution”. We will

construct a few different experimental model systems and study the
# c8 I+ Q. ^$ q4 Q4 h
dynamics and boundary condition effects of geometrical frustration at
" o* w0 G) b3 l! q6 L6 o& L
“single-spin resolution”.

Candidates with some experience about video microscopy, colloids, optical
% a' {- F& B8 s- f" G* A6 N1 z2 ]tweezer, spin frustration, or computer simulations are preferred. Our

experiments are like MD simulations which measure the trajectories of all
7 d8 A" @* ^# E2 B+ h“atoms” or “spins”, thus a candidate with some simulation backgrounds can
