This is scientific Americans, 60 seconds science. I’m Karen Hopkin. This will just take a minute. You’ve probably heard of the whole 6-degree-separation thing. It predicts that on average, you know more than 6 links away from any other people on the planet. Like your roommate runs into a woman whose brother is a writer for Desperate Housewives, which means you are only six invites away from having lunch with Marcia Cross’s nannies. The concept stamps from the fact that people have social networks, and those networks tend to intersect. But the importance of this small world phenomenon extends beyond whose e-mail address you have on your blackberry. Now scientists think that they can take advantages of these networks to design more
efficient  vaccination programs. According to an international team of physicists, the most effective way to protect a population from diseases is to immunize people who have the largest networks. If you can keep the most connected people from infecting their friends, neighbors,
co-workers, you can hold an epidemic. And you may have to vaccinate half the number of people you would normally. The findings will appear in an upcoming issue of physical review letters. The biggest problem was such a program people are bond to feel left out when they were told that they don’t need a shot. Thanks for the minute for scientific American, 60 seconds science. I’m Karen Hopkin.
Marcia Cross

You’ve probably heard the whole six degrees separation thing. It predicts that, on average, you are no more than six links away than any other person on the planet, like your roommate runs into a woman, whose brother has a rightful desperate housewife) is a writer for Deperate Housewives, which means you are only six (in bites) invites away from have lunch with XXX. The concept stems from the fact people have social networks, and those networks tend to intersect. But the importance of this small world (for dominion) phenomenon extends beyond whose email addresses you have on your Blackberry. Now scientists think they could take advantage of this network to design more efficient fascination/vaccination programs. According to an international team of physicists, the most effective way to protect the population from diseases is to immunize the people who have the largest networks. If you can keep the most highly connected people from infecting their friends, neighbors, coworkers, you can hold an epidemic. And you may only have to fascinate/vaccinate half the number of people you would normally, the findings will appear in an upcoming issue of physical review letters. The biggest problem with such a program, maybe people are bound to feel left out to when they are told they don’t need a shut.

对照楼上的楼上的强人的改的,不过我觉得应该是no more than,不是know more than,stems from,不是stamps from

Good morning. This weekend Americans are celebrating the anniversary of our nation’s independence. 232 years ago our founding fathers came together in Philadelphia to proclaim that all men are created equal and they are endowed by their creator with unalienable rights to life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness. The man who wrote those motto words was Thomas Jefferson. Yesterday I celebrated 4th of July in Monticello, Jefferson’s home in Virginia. Well, there I witnessed an event that would make the author of the Declaration of Independence proud. On Monticello’s lawn more than 70 men and women from dozens of countries raised their right hands to take the oath of American citizenship. They swore their allegiance to the Constitution; they promised that they would defend the laws of the Unites States, and they reminded everyone in attendance that the promise of America is open to all. These new citizens come from countries as diverse as Burma, Afghanistan, Norway and Iraq. These new citizens are approved that there is no American race, just the American Cree. In the Unites States we believe in the rights and dignity of every person; we believe in equal justice, limited government and the rule of law, and we believe in personal responsibility and tolerance towards others. These creative freedom and equality have lifted the lives of millions of Americans, whether citizens by birth or citizens by choice. This creative freedom requires brave defenders and every generation of Americans has produced them, from the soldiers who fought for independence in Bark Hinton, York Town, to the Americans who broke the chains of slavery, liberated Europe and Asia from tyranny and brought down an evil empire. The people at this great land have always reason to freedom’s defense. Today the men and women of American arm forces continue this proud tradition of defending liberty in places like Afghanistan and Iraq. Many risk their lives everyday to protect America and uphold the principle that human freedom is the birth right of all people, and a gift from the all mighty. These brave Americans make it possible for America to endure as a free society. So on 4th of July we owe all those who wear the uniforms of the Unites States a special day of gratitude and thank their families for supporting them in this crucial time for our nation. 4th of July is a day when all Americans take a moment to share a collective sense of pride in our country. We live in a nation founded on the power of an idea, a nation where opportunity is only limited by imagination, and a nation that has done more than any other to spread liberty throughout the world. Today let light shine as brightly as it did in 1776 and with protection of divine provenance it will continue to shine brightly for generations to come. Thank you for listening.

THE PRESIDENT: Good morning. This weekend, Americans are celebrating the anniversary of our Nation's independence. Two hundred and thirty-two years ago, our Founding Fathers came together in Philadelphia to proclaim that all men are created equal and that they are endowed by their Creator with unalienable rights to life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness.
The man who wrote those immortal words was Thomas Jefferson. Yesterday, I celebrated the Fourth of July at Monticello, Jefferson's home in Virginia. While there, I witnessed an event that would have made the author of the Declaration of Independence proud. On Monticello's lawn, more than 70 men and women from dozens of countries raised their right hands to take the oath of American citizenship. They swore their allegiance to the Constitution. They promised that they would defend the laws of the United States. And they reminded everyone in attendance that the promise of America is open to all.
These new citizens come from countries as diverse as Burma, Afghanistan, Norway, and Iraq. These new citizens are proof that there is no American race, just an American creed. In the United States, we believe in the rights and dignity of every person. We believe in equal justice, limited government, and the rule of law. And we believe in personal responsibility and tolerance towards others. This creed of freedom and equality has lifted the lives of millions of Americans, whether citizens by birth or citizens by choice.
This creed of freedom has required brave defenders, and every generation of Americans has produced them. From the soldiers who fought for independence at Bunker Hill and Yorktown, to the Americans who broke the chains of slavery, liberated Europe and Asia from tyranny, and brought down an evil empire, the people of this great land have always risen to freedom's defense.
Today, the men and women of America's Armed Forces continue this proud tradition of defending liberty. In places like Afghanistan and Iraq, many risk their lives every day to protect America and uphold the principle that human freedom is the birthright of all people and a gift from the Almighty. These brave Americans make it possible for America to endure as a free society. So on this Fourth of July, we owe all those who wear the uniform of the United States a special debt of gratitude. And we thank their families for supporting them in this crucial time for our Nation.
The Fourth of July is a day when all Americans take a moment to share a collective sense of pride in our country. We live in a Nation founded on the power of an idea, a Nation where opportunity is limited only by imagination, and a Nation that has done more than any other to spread the light of liberty throughout the world. Today, that light shines as brightly as it did in 1776. And with "the protection of Divine Providence" it will continue to shine brightly for generations to come.
Thank you for listening.

Bush-080705

Good morning.
This weekend Americans celebrated the anniversary of our nation's Independence.232 years ago, our founded (founding) fathers came together at Philadelphia to proclaim that 'all men are created equal'. And then they are doubted (endowed) by their creator with unalienable rights of life, liberty and the pursue (pursuit) of happiness.
The man who wrote these mortal (immortal) words was Thomas Jefferson. Yesterday I celebrated the 4th of July in M, Jefferson’s home in Virginia. While there, I witnessed an event that would make the author of the decoration (declaration) of independence proud. On M's lounge, more than 70 men and women from dozens of country raised their right hands to take the oath of American citizenship. They swore their religion (allegiance) to the constitution. They promised they would defend the laws of the United States. And they reminded everyone at the attendance that the promise of America is open to all. These new citizens come from countries as diverse as B, AF, N, and Iraq.
These new citizens prove (are proof) that there is no American race, just American Q (creed). And in the United States we believe in the right of dignity of every person. We believe in the equal justice, believe in limited government in the roof (and the rule) of law, we believe in personal responsibility and tolerance towards others.
These Q (creed) of freedom and equality has lift light of millions of Americans, whether citizens by birth or citizens by choice.
These Q (creed) of freedom requires brave defenders, and every generation of Americans has produced them. From the soldiers who fought for independence from (at) B in (and) Y, to the Americans who broke the chains of slavery, liberated Europe and Asia from P, (tyranny )and broke down the evil empire. The people of this great land have always risen of defense.
Today, the men and women of American are forced to continue this proud tradition of defending of liberty. In places like AF and Iraq, many risked their lives everyday to protect America, and approve that (uphold) the principle of (that) all human freedom is the birth right of all people, and the gift from the almighty. These brave Americans make it possible for American to renew (endure) as a free society. So on this 4th of July, we own all those who worn the uniform of United States a special debt of gratitude and we thank their families for supporting them in this crucial time for our nation.
4th of July is a day when all Americans take a moment to share the collected sense of pride of our country. We live in a nation founded on the power of idea, a nation where opportunity is limited only by imagination and a nation that has done more than any other to spread the light of liberty through out the world.
Today, that light shines as brightly as it did in 1776, and with ‘the protection of divided (divine) providence’, it will continue to shine brightly, for generations to come.
Thank you for listening.

allegiance...endow...endure...creed...declaration....tyranny... 。。
'and the rule of law',我给听成‘in the roof of law’了。

not to mention on your hips应该是戏谑的说法,可能是指不要通过臀围的增大来提到cake了吧,just a guess

Dear diary,
Today I ate three carrot sticks while I emphasized (fantasized) about eating carrot cakes. All right, all right, I ate three pieces of carrot cake and never once consider that actual carrot. How might I ever gonna lose that last ten pounds?
While a new research shows that keeping a diary, a food diary, can help. According to a study published in the August issue of the Annals of preventing of Medicine, people who write down everything they eat each day lose twice as much as those who don't.
Nearly 1700 people participated in the study. They were asked to follow a heart healthy diet full of fruit and fugis (veggies) and low fat or none fat diet.
They attended weekly group sections and were totally engaged in model exercise for half an hour a day. After six months, nearly two thirds of the participants have lost at least 9 pounds.
But the real surprise came from the food logs. Those who simply kept tract of what they consumed lose twice as much as those who failed to fess up.
So next time you are tempted by (the clarion call) of carrot cake, stop to consider how that might (will) looking at your diary, not to mention on your hips.

Bright Bugs Clue for Plant Medicinals
In the insect world, bright reds, oranges and yellows can be a warning: “Eat me at your own risk, pal.” Because colorful bugs can be toxic, they often get their chemical protection from nibbling poisonous plants. But these poisons can have a flip side for us—some fight cancer or tropical parasites that cause diseases like malaria.
The idea that colorful bugs can tip us off to disease-fighting plants isn’t new. But researchers at the Smithsonian Tropical Research Institute just backed it up with science, in the journal Frontiers in Ecology and the Environment.

They chose ten plant species that kill parasites and cancer in lab tests, and ten species that look similar but do nothing. Then they headed into the Panamanian jungle to survey hundreds of these plants for beetles and caterpillars. Turns out, they found colorful bugs on almost all the toxic plants but less than half of the harmless plants. And black, brown and gray bugs didn’t have a preference—they ate indiscriminately. So modern-day shamans scouring the jungle for cancer-fighting drugs might just cut down on search time by keeping an eye out—for brightly colored bugs.

In the insert world, bright, red, orange and yellow can be a warning:
‘Eat me at your own risk, pow (pal).’ Because colorful bugs can be toxic, they often get their chemical protection from new bleeding (nibbling) poisonous plants. But these poisons can have a flic (flip) side on us. Some fight cancer, or tropical parasites that causing diseases like malaria.
The idea that colorful bugs can tipasites (tip us off to) disease-fighting plants isn't new. But researchers at the M in tropical Research Institute just bact (back) it up with science in the Journal Funteria (frontiers) in Ecology of environment. They chose ten plant species that kill diseases like parasite and cancer in laptap (lab tests) and ten species that look similar but do nothing.
Then they headed into the P. Jungle to survey hundreds of these plants for beetles and caterpillars.

不熟悉的单词跟词组:pal , nibbling, tip sb off, back up with, frontier, shaman, scour, keep an eye out

pal: (infml) good friend
back up with 没找到,有一个back sb up: support   两个大概差不多
keep an eye on:照看,留意  keep an eye up: 警惕   (第一个应该比较贴切吧?)

Dicey Proposition: Animals Are Self-Aware
The New York Times Magazine recently focused on Americans splurging on mood-altering drugs for their pets.

Inevitably, the question emerges: Do animals think and feel? Are they self-aware? Are they…conscious?

Philosophers argue we can't know what goes on in an animal's mind because they don't share human language.

But recent research is breaking down that barrier to find out how self-aware animals are. Columbia's Herb Terrace and Nate Kornell trained monkeys to make bets: The primates wagered on how well they knew something.

Thinking about one's thinking is called metacognition, and thus far it's been attributed only to humans.

In their study, published in Psychological Science, monkeys bet on whether they knew the answer to a question. They won tokens by betting correctly that they either knew or didn’t know the answer.

The monkeys did so well at the gambling that they appeared to have the self-awareness required for thinking about their knowledge.

But researchers don't call this consciousness. They call it self-reflective behavior, similar to programmed robots. The monkey might be linking "a long pause" with "don't know the answer".

Back to 2004, the M.I.T team reported the  ??(Piraha什么地方啊?)people seemed to have terms to(原文that,说明我经常听错连接词)describe one, two or many. This is based on as twice as many on counting objects ?? so not double-A batteries as the researchers lay the more. (这整句都错了,原文:This was based on asking tribe members to count objects, like sticks or nuts or AA batteries, as the researchers laid them out.) This time the science(原scientists)has the subject to the backhand (原count back,不懂什么意思..)as they remove things. And they discover the drive(tribe是什么)members used the word previously got the meaning of 2, first meaning 5 or 6 objects.(从previously后面开始,原文thought to mean “two” for as many as five or six objects.) And they use the one(word) “1” for anything less than map[?]. So the words don’t stand for numbers so much as relative amounts. The finding appears (in the) online additional ?? ??(edition of the journal Cognition.)
Although the ?? (Piraha) people might not need numbers, they could work(think of what they are) missing. [这首歌没听出来…“A large number of trombones led the big parade, with an even larger number of cornets close at hand…”]

原文:
Counting is one of the first things we teach our kids. I mean, every parent’s probably said, “You had better be in that bed by the time I count to three.” Followed by “One…two…two-and-a-half…” But counting might not be as universal as it seems. Because scientists from M.I.T. have found that a tribe living in the Amazon has no words for numbers.
Back in 2004, the M.I.T. team reported that the Piraha people seemed to have terms that described “one,” “two,” or “many.” This was based on asking tribe members to count objects, like sticks or nuts or AA batteries, as the researchers laid them out. This time, the scientists had the subjects count backward as they removed things. And they discovered that tribe members used the word previously thought to mean “two” for as many as five or six objects. And they used the word “one” for anything less than that. So the words don’t stand for numbers, so much as relative amounts. The findings appear in the online edition of the journal Cognition.

Although the Piraha people might not need numbers, think of what they’re missing. “A large number of trombones led the big parade, with an even larger number of cornets close at hand…”
