So I was please about that you can imagine as a little girl and what happened was so, is that after I was 13 I had very few periods maybe one or two year. And that was quite concerting for me or your friends talking about it in school. But after a few years gone by, my mum and I, a kind of discuss that I was scared to go to the doctors and that kind of started the ball rolling and finding out that I actually did have folly cystic ovaries. ANNA LACY: Because it wasn’t just periods that you’re having problems with, was it? REBECCA: No, I also had some other symptoms which I suppose you maybe say it was to do just being a teenager, I’m actually had very bad skin also that was breast development as you expected at that age, which also was quite a concern for a young girl you know when you are growing up they are the kind of things you don’t want to have to have. ANNA LACY: I don’t have polycystic ovaries, despite having both sisters. And so how do you maybe feel, comparing, say to me, who was a couple of years older, and having periods, and getting a new bra, and that kind of things. REBECCA: Well, to be honest, I was pretty jealous. It was just something I want to be just like you. And I thought I wasn’t, and it made me just feel I suppose like uh, I wasn’t the proper girl, and you know that’s not very nice thing to feel when you are so aware of yourself and everybody else around you that age and um, I say ,also, It wouldn’t bother me now, but when you’re at that ages very very stressful situation to be in and it did bother me that that you, and all my friends were just having the normal life and I knew behind the doors and It didn’t seem normal for me. ANNA LACY: Cause I remembered the many times when you went to the doctors they did put it down to you she’s just growing up, she would catch up at the end, she’s just got the acne, here, have some steroid cream but they didn’t work, did they? REBECCA: No, there’s a couple of times I went to the doctors about my skin for example that’s probably the main thing that was really overt and, I was given different skin creams. They appeared to work in the beginning which was such a relief to me but then it was just mouthing over the real problem, and give a couple of months and then the problem seemed to kind of returned, didn’t it? And it seemed like the problem was never gonna getting me better, and I did go quite a few more times and then they decided to take some blood tests and that’s when we actually realized what I had. ANNA LACY: So, the polycystic ovary is to do with having a hormone imbalance. That’s why some of the developmental thing one happening as you should expected and then they put you on a pill, so how did that make difference? REBECCA: Yeah, the pill was fantastic for me, I was put on it at 17, and very quickly my skin cleared up. Probably in the first months I noticed the huge difference, and it made me feel far more comfortable with myself. And quite noticeably as well I started to develop far quicker. And also because of I was on a pill, I was having periods so it made me feel a kind of more normal among my peer group. It was uh definitely beneficial going on to the pill. ANNA LACY: Well you’ve been on the pill now since 17, and now 21 and you have wonderful skin, and you have a lovely figure of course, how has polycystic affected you since then? REBECCA: To be honest, it hasn’t affected me at all, uh, I have periods and now I was just like any normal young person. ANNA LACY: And of course won’t you get a bit older and you might want to start family, there are a few issues around that aren’t there? REBECCA: Yeah, when I started asking the doctors just said you know, when I do want to have a family I need to cool off the pill and a mainly to take hormone tablets to increase eastern levels if necessary but always I would know until I do try for baby if that going to be necessary or not. But the doctors made it very clear that there would be no problem with me having baby it just maybe a little more difficult and by the time I do want to have children I think things would be fine. THE HOSTESS: Rebecca Lacy there and her experience with poly cystic ovaries, that’s all for this week, but I’ll be back at the same time next week for movie finding out a group of doctors exposed themselves to the elements on top of mount Everest, join me then. |
