GMAT语法被很多考生一贯说成是“世界上最难的语法考试”,说其难,是因为很多情况下,出题者更乐于利用复合句和复杂句的特点,挖空心思把选项设计的极具迷惑性。GMAT语法题侧重从句法结构层和语义表达层两个方面进行题目及选项的设计。譬如下面两道题的设计更加突出了这两个方面的特点:

结构提取

通过提取题干的主体结构,发现该题中有一both……and……结构,那么可以据此判断both后的内容与and后的内容,属于平行关系,两者需在形式上保持对称,但是both后面为 “rooted in the stride-piano tradition of Willie Smith” 而and 后面却是Duke Ellington, 显然动词短语“rooted in……”与专有名词“Duke Ellington”无论从形式上还是内容上都不足以构成平行关系。出题者在设计此题时旨在考察考生能否判断出“both……and…..”结构在该题中的存在是否是合理的。显然该题最主要的设计思路是以句法结构为主线展开的。这就告诉我们,当看到类似“both… and…”这样的结构时,我们首先需要对具体结构在具体句子中存在的合理性进行判断,而不是想当然的将该类结构圈定为可选目标。
